What is a degree? 

In English Grammar, Degree is nothing but the forms of adjectives and adverbs.

There are 3 forms of adjectives i.e. 3 types of degree.

1. Positive Degree : the first and basic form of adjective.(EG Good)

In positive Degree, We use as/so before and after the degree.

For EG: as good as 

2. Comparative Degree : Higher form than positive degree(Eg Better)

In Comparative Degree , We use than after the second form of the degree.

For Eg: better than

3. Superlative Degree: Highest form of the degree.(Eg Best)

In Superlative degree, We can see adjectives ending with ___est or most before the adjective. 

For Eg : highest ,  most beautiful

We divide the sentence of degree into three types and will learn it one by one.

First Type(Comparison between two):

In the first type there is comparison between two people or things. When there is comparison between two people, Superlative degree doesn’t exist for such comparison. 

• Interchange the subject and Object.
• Convert Affirmative Sentence to Negative Sentence and Negative Sentence to Affirmative Sentence.
• Positive degree is changed into a superlative degree.
• Superlative degree is changed into a Positive Degree.

Examples: 

1. Ram is as good as Shyam.
   Ans: Shyam is not better than Ram

2. The pen is mightier than the sword. 
   Ans: The Sword is not as mighty as the pen.
   
   
3. Germany does not have as many sunny days as India.
   Ans: India has more sunny days than Germany.
   

Second Type(Comparison with all)

Positive  Degree        :     No Other + Obj + HV + as/so + degree 1 + as + Subject

Comparative Degree    :     Subject  + HV + degree 2 + than any other + Object 

Superlative Degree       :     Subject + HV + degree3 + Object

Examples : 

1. The cow is the most useful animal.
   Ans: Positive: No other animal is as useful as the cow.
   Comparative: The cow is more useful than any other animal.
   
   
2. The Taj Mahal is the most beautiful monument in India.
   Ans : Positive: No other monument in India is as beautiful as the Taj Mahal.
   Comparative: The Taj Mahal is more beautiful than any other monument in India. 
   
   
3. Jupiter is the largest of all planets.
   Ans: Positive: No other planet is as large as Jupiter.
   Comparative: Jupiter is larger than any other planet.

Third Type(One of the)

Positive  Degree         :    Very few + Obj + HV + as/so + degree 1 + as + Subject

Comparative Degree  :     Subject  + HV + degree 2 + than most other + Object 

Superlative Degree     :     Subject + HV + one of the + degree3 + Object

Examples : 
1. Cow is one of the most useful animals.
Positive: Very few animals are as useful as Cow.
Comparative: Cow is more useful than most other animals.

2. The Nobel Prize is one of the greatest honours in the world.
Positive: Very few honours in the world are as great as the Nobel Prize.
Comparative: The Nobel Prize is greater than most other honours in the world.
